Researchers at the University of Oregon have discovered the unique molecular structure of H. pylori bacteria that allows it to survive in
the acidic stomach. The research showedthat the H. pylori molecules bind to another small molecular called urea and this allows it to sense the external environment and avoid acid. By manipulating the atomic structure of H. pylori so that it can’t bind with urea the researchers showed that the bacteria was no longer able to navigate away from the stomach acid. This discovery could eventually lead to more effective treatments to eradicate H. pylori. Metabolic Solutions offers healthcare professionals the urea breath test to detect H. pylori infection.
